Capricorn holds a unique place in the astrological mystery tradition. Capricorn is represented by a goat with a fish’s tail, and we can trace its origins back to the founding Mesopotamian deity Oannes. He was sometimes referred to as “the antelope of the sea.” In the Greek tradition he is known as Pan, whose Celtic counterpart is Cernunnos aka Herne.
In the midwinter phase of the astrological calendar we encounter the sign of Capricorn, which is the also the sign of the spiritual initiate or teacher (Oannes-Ea taught humanity everything they needed to know) and it is into this sign that the dying and rising savior is traditionally born. (No, not Jesus) Cernunnos was known as “The Sacred King” who looks out upon his people and sees their suffering. He determines that the only way to save them is to be sacrificed so that the land will become fertile and the people can live. Soon though he is born again and rises as the Sun God who melts away the snow and ice, then crops grow.
Esoterically, Capricorn represents the gateway through which the soul ascends, and this is traditionally with the moment when the sun experiences its annual re-birth. It was also known as "The Gate of the Gods” and “The Portal of Ascension” through which souls of the departed ascended back to the Heavens to free themselves from earthly trappings upon death.
